As piracy attacks and International terror increases, International Maritime Organization (IMO) states new regulations in order to increase the security at sea. The regulations from IMO covering the International ship and Port Facility Securing Code (ISPS) and Ships Security Alert (SSAS) require ship owners worldwide to implement new routines and new equipment on board ships.

The following vessels are covered by the regulations and required to have a Ship Security Alert System installed:

The requirements are specified in the amendments to SOLAS, chapter XI, Annex 6 (December 2002).
